Are you planning on traveling this summer? ATLAS knows that many faculty and staff members are leaving campus for the summer and may be traveling with their laptops which can contain sensitive University data. ATLAS would like to extend an invitation for faculty and staff members with laptops to reach out to their IT Pros as soon as possible to ensure that the data on their laptop is suitably protected for their summer travels.
The simple solution to this problem is to enable Full Disk Encryption (FDE) on your laptop. This will encrypt all the files on your computer, which is the industry security standard when it comes to ensuring that local computer data is properly protected.
In addition to email and phishing attacks, the University has seen a marked increase in computers being stolen. In the majority of cases, the computers stolen are laptops that are often left in high traffic areas while traveling. Because of this recent problem, ATLAS is continuing to work with faculty and staff members to come up with the most efficient strategies to secure and protect University data. It is imperative that the sensitive data cannot be accessed by non-University personnel if a computer falls into the wrong hands. In many cases, a password alone will not protect data from being accessed off a misplaced computer.
Please use the ATLAS ticketing system found at http://support.atlas.illinois.edu to submit a request to have your laptop checked to ensure it is protected via FDE.
