ATLAS Web Services, in collaboration with the LAS Office of Communications and Marketing, is implementing a new approach to building websites to make them easier to update, more effective, and will more efficiently use the resources we have for creating websites. There are two components to our approach. First, as sites are redesigned we will implement a new Content Management System. After analyzing available tools and meeting with several departments, we have selected Drupal as the best solution for LAS. Drupal allows editing of content directly in the browser with no special software such as Dreamweaver or Contribute. It also allows us to reuse data throughout the site reducing the amount of duplicate data entry. The end result will be mobile-friendly, accessible sites that are easier for units to maintain. We will implement Drupal as sites slated to be redesigned, and will train staff to use this new tool.
The second component in our new approach will be introduction of a common visual framework for LAS sites. This will significantly shorten the time needed to redesign sites, allowing us to work on more sites each year. Additionally, it will create a visual identity more closely tied to college and campus brand standards. Units will make important decisions within this framework that will communicate their identity. During the fall semester, Web Services will pilot this new approach. We’ll then refine the program and expand to additional units. We’ll share more information as this process progresses
